Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the US Open 2023 as he continues to recover from several injuries.
The quarter-finalist of last year’s tournament has been affected by knee, foot and wrist injuries and will miss all four Slams in a single season for the first time in his career.
“Heartbroken about the US Open,” Kyrgios wrote on Instagram. “My wrist is not ready to compete. But may I remind people that I have a protected ranking of 21 when I choose to be back I’ll be back where I belong.”
The 28-year-old missed the Australian Open in January due to a minor knee injury after which he had to undergo surgery.
After that, he missed French Open in June due to a foot injury he suffered during the theft of his car.
Kyrgios faced a defeat in his comeback match, after spending five months on the sidelines, against China's Wu Yibing in the Stuttgart Open first round on June 13.
After that, He also pulled out of Wimbledon 2023 — where he reached the final in 2022 — due to a wrist injury.
This is the first time the Aussie is missing US Open due to an injury, he did not play in 2020 due to Covid.
Now, with Kyrgios out, the battle for the US Open seems likely to be between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.
Earlier, Kyrgios confirmed that there is “no chance” he will play tennis till 33.
“No f****** chance. No way. Bro, there's no chance I'm playing until 33,” he replied. “Kyrgios playing until 33 is insane. I'm not playing until 33. Nah, I promise you, when I'm gone, you'll never see me again. The schedule is out of control. I'm getting old, I'm getting old. 28, yeah - but all the drinking and partying, I'm like 57.”
It must be noted that Kyrgios is one of the most talented players in tennis who would try something new every time he is in action but is known to have a bad temperament. He has been in the news many times for reasons other than tennis.
