Chelsea’s new boss Mauricio Pochettino continues summer clear-out as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has agreed to join French club Marseille on a free transfer.
The Gabonese striker is set to sign a three-year deal with the Ligue 1 club which will keep him at the club till 2026 while his medical is scheduled on Thursday.
The former Arsenal striker has been out of favour ever since his arrival at Stamford Bridge as he never got the play under the manager Thomas Tuchel, as he was sacked just after his debut, who signed him.
Chelsea, who have already sold important players like Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, N’golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Eduardo Mendy and many others, have now decided to offload the 34-year-old as he was not in the plans of Pochettino.
Auba has attracted offers from Major League Soccer (MLS) and Saudi Pro League in the past but the striker decided to join the French club as he still wants to compete in the top-European football.
The Gabonese footballer has already played for big clubs like Borussia Dortmund (BvB), Arsenal, FC Barcelona, and AS Monaco and is now about to add Marseille to his list.
Playing for BvB, Auba netted 141 goals and provided 36 assists in 213 matches where he also helped the German club win the German Super Cup twice and German Cup once. He also finished as the league’s top-scorer in the 2016-17 season with 31 goals.
Meanwhile, during his time at Arsenal, the 34-year-old notched up 92 goals and provided 21 assists in 163 appearances, helping the Gunners with the FA Cup in 2020.
While with Barcelona, he only got to play 23 games in a season where he scored 13 goals and won the league title for the Blaugrana club.
It must be noted that despite many key signings including the World Cup 2022 winner Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea finished 12th last season in the Premier League. They lost more matches (16) than they won (11). They also changed three managers during the season.
