Former tennis star Roger Federer broke a royal protocol during his visit at Wimbledon on Tuesday (July 5).

Federer arrived at Wimbledon as the Centre Court crowd gave the Swiss a prolonged standing ovation for his heroics while he entered the royal box.

The Swiss won an Open Era-record eight Wimbledon singles titles during his illustrious tennis career.

As he walked to the Royal Box, Federer gave his wife Mirka a kiss on the cheeks and then touched the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton’s back and proceeded to give the princess a kiss on the cheeks before he was stopped by Kate as she simply gave him a nod.

It is worth mentioning that in royal circles, a kiss on the cheeks is considered disrespectful.

A handshake is the most familiar way of greeting commoners by a British royal, and it is only if the royal extends their hand first otherwise they should remain untouched.

It must be noted that Federer has been friends with Kate’s sister Pippa for years and he even taught Prince George how to play tennis.

It is to mention here that Kate and Roger are working on several projects together and both starring in a video highlighting the work of ball boys and girls in late June, where the royal put the tennis star through his paces.
