England wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings has opened up about his skin cancer treatment in order to remove a malignant melanoma on his chest in 2022.

The right-handed batter has urged cricketers to protect themselves from the sun.

While talking to The Telegraph, Billings said he was changing during one of England's white-ball matches against Australia in November when his teammates questioned about the scar on his chest.

"I think the boys were pretty shocked," he said. "It put cricket on the back burner and into perspective."

Billings also said that the attitude of people in England was "pretty blasé" about applying sun cream, while also claiming that there is not as much education on the dangers of the sun as compared to countries like Australia.

"I've been that classic Brit abroad, as a 22-year-old with fairer hair in Australia thinking that it was worth going a bit red to end up brown," he said.

"I'm not just talking about the pro game," he said. "It's club cricketers, people who watch the game.

"We treat it [applying sun cream] like a chore. I'd like to see everyone in cricket working together: the sun is out, so let's protect ourselves."

Billings got the diagnosis after he went to a skin cancer screening at his county, Kent, and had the procedure in October 2022.

"The margins are so small but can have massive consequences," Billings said.
