Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja believes that Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan should be backed as Pakistan team openers in T20Is.

The opening duo, who garnered success since 2021, has remained under massive criticism for their strike rate, especially in batting powerplay.

After the arrival of Saim Ayub and Mohammad Haris, fans voiced for the change in opening pair. However, Babar and Rizwan continued to open against New Zealand in first home T20I after resting in recently concluded Afghanistan T20I series.

Following the early departure of both Babar and Rizwan in first T20I against the Kiwis on Friday, once again the debate started on openers. Also, Saim Ayub, who was sent to bat at number four, scored quick 47 runs to bring Pakistan out of trouble.

While analysing this matter after yesterday's victory, Ramiz said Babar and Rizwan have ample time to continue dominating in the shorter format.

"Babar Azam needs to play an anchor role if the pitches remain the same. This is not his batting approach to just step out and hit it out of the park. He does take time to settle but he covers up for that later. Similarly, Rizwan's footwork could've been better but most importantly his balance should maintain if ball starts to seam. They don't need to rush," Ramiz said on his YouTube channel.

"They are capable of making extensive partnerships which benefits Pakistan at the end of the day. They create a strong base for others to propel afterwards them. So don't forget basics, no need to play in haste. They both have class, they both have ample time. Good thing is Pakistan is off to a winning start, so congratulations Babar and co," he further added.

Ramiz had remained vocal about aggressive brand of cricket before he took PCB chairmanship. However, after he became chairman, his stance changed a bit and once he also said, "I haven’t even thought of life beyond Babar Azam."
