Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated that his side will have to consistently play well if they want to move up the table in the Premier League.
Liverpool are currently in ninth place on the table and will face Newcastle later today (Saturday).
Ahead of the match, Klopp shed light on whether he has confidence Liverpool can embark on an unbeaten streak.
“I think [so] but we have to show that. It was incredibly difficult last year [to do it] – it was always incredibly difficult. If we go through the games [last season] then I'm pretty sure we won some of them late. We were not always brilliant, we forced luck here and there and then we had other games where we were really flying, in early leads and these kind of things, different moments. We didn't have these kind of situations really often [this season],” Klopp said.
“It [an unbeaten run] could happen but we don't think it will happen – we just know tomorrow is Newcastle, nothing else. That's already difficult enough but it must be difficult, much more difficult, for Newcastle as well than it was for all the other teams we visited, or cities we visited, in previous times,” he added.
He also gave a detailed analysis of his side’s performance, which has left a lot to be desired, this season.
“For a big part of the season, we've always sat here and you've asked me, 'Again, 1-0 down...' – we kept that for a pretty long time. Then it took long until we got a lead, then we have a lead and then we got an equaliser [against us] and all these kind of things. These kinds of things can happen; you need to be stable to go through this,” he said.
“That's the difference in this moment how it felt for me from the game we won against Aston Villa to this game against Everton. This was us, the intensity was there. Yes, the goals were counter-attacks but when you are as dominant as we are, with all the bad things we did this season, we still have the second-most shots on target [in the league], I think at least until last week.
“We still have the second-highest possession, all these kind of things. So, it's like, 'OK, we just should hit the target in the end – or score from it, that would be really great!' Counter-attacking goals I pretty much cannot remember [this season]. Counter-attacking does not mean you defend deep all the time and now you have a chance to counter-attack. We don't have that situation that often, but there are situations like after set-pieces where you can react quick, but there are different things you need for it – awareness and the runs and all these kind of things, and of course precision with the passes.”
