Premier League club Manchester City has issued a statement in response to the verdict in the Benjamin Mendy trial.

Following a six-month trial, the French defender was found not guilty of sex attacks on four women, while jurors were unable to reach convictions on two others.

"Manchester City FC notes the verdict from Chester Crown Court today, where a jury has found Benjamin Mendy not guilty of seven charges. The jury is hung on two charges and the trial is now over," a statement added shortly after.

"Given there are open matters related to this case, the Club is not in a position to comment further at this time."

The jury of seven men and four women issued unanimous verdicts on Wednesday, with one juror being released early for medical reasons.

The results could not be revealed until jurors finished evaluating the last two counts after the judge gave them a majority direction, which meant he would accept a 10-1 majority on any verdict.

However, jurors were unable to reach verdicts on Mendy's alleged attempted rape of a woman, 29, in 2018 and the rape of another woman, 24, in October 2020 after 14 days of deliberation.

Meanwhile, a decision on retrial on those unresolved counts is still pending.

Mendy last played for City against Tottenham Hotspur in August 2021, and he was suspended by the Premier League team later that month after being detained.

The France international joined City from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2017 for a sum in the region of $63.29 million.
