Bayer Leverkusen are just one away from their first-ever Bundesliga title after beating Union Berlin 1-0 in yet another close encounter as Florian Wirtz’s first-half penalty differentiated the two teams.

On the same day, after losing to Borussia Dortmund last week, Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich blew a two-goal lead against Heidenheim and are now mathematically out of the title race as they are now 16 points behind Leverkusen.

Harry Kane gave his side a lead in the 38th minute which was doubled just seven minutes later by Serge Gnabry but the Bavarians lost control of the match and conceded three goals within the 35 minutes of the second half which ended their hopes for a title win this year.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso’s side continued to show immense maturity and are just three points away from winning their first-ever league title in history.

Leverkusen have now gone 41 matches without tasting a defeat. In the same process, they scored 116 goals and gained 76 points in the league, 16 more than second-placed Bayern.

Alonso’s side will take on Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga next on April 14 at the BayArena, where they can claim the title in front of their home crowd with just a win.

Remember, as the league title is all but secured, Leverkusen is currently competing for the treble as other than the league, they are in the DFB Pokal final, where they will play FC Kaiserslautern and will also take on West Ham United in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final.

It must be noted that Alonso was rumoured to join one of Liverpool or Bayern for next season but the Spaniard announced earlier that he would continue his journey with Leverkusen for one more season.

“I had a good meeting with Bayer Leverkusen and I informed them that I will stay and continue at the club,” Alonso said as quoted by The Telegraph.

“After lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place to be for me.”
