West Indies took the cricket world by surprise as they defeated Australia by eight runs in one of the most thrilling Test encounters at the Gabba on Sunday.

Shamar Joseph was the visitors’ undisputed hero of the day as the 24-year-old bagged a seven-wicket haul to ensure his side’s first Test win at the Australian soil since 1997.

Legendary West Indies’ batter, Brian Lara, who was commentating at the end of the match, couldn’t control his emotions as his nation recorded the remarkable win.

The former left-handed batter hugged Australia’s Adam Gilchrist after Joseph took the final wicket of Mitchell Starc and the emotions flew all over the commentary box witnessing West Indies’ astounding win.

It is worth noting that Joseph had suffered a toe injury from a Starc yorker on Saturday evening, forcing him to retire hurt. Despite visible signs of limping between overs during the run-chase, he showcased remarkable resilience.

Australia came into Sunday's play with two wickets down, Joseph went on to take seven of the eight wickets to fall. The young West Indies team, without key players like Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers, caused a monumental upset as Australia experienced their first-ever defeat in a day-night match.

The 24-year-old’s remarkable spell included bowling Cameron Green through the gate, yorking Travis Head for a king pair, having Mitchell Marsh edged to slip, castling Alex Carey, inducing a top-edge from Mitchell Starc on a pull shot, witnessing Joshua de Silva's brilliant catch to dismiss Pat Cummins, and concluding with Josh Hazlewood having his off-stump knocked back.

Joseph was a net-bowler in the Caribbean Premier League a few months ago and only made his first-class debut last February.
