Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has stated that the club can’t afford to sign top players like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
Between 2017-19, the Catalan club shelled out more than 100 million euros for Philippe Coutinho, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele but that is not the case anymore due to financial issues.
However, Xavi said that the club is hopeful about roping in new players in the January transfer window.
"I have to deal with the players I have, because right now we are not able to think about those [Haaland or Mbappe] kinds of signings. Unfortunately, we are not in a privileged situation economically to do that. I am left with the players I have, and with those players we have to win," added the Spaniard, speaking ahead of Barcelona's La Liga match at Las Palmas on Thursday.
"We have to win titles and we have to play well because the bar is very high."
Barcelona are on fourth position in the league, 10 points behind table-toppers Real Madrid, who have played one game more than Xavi's side.
One of the things to look forward to in the match is the possibility of Brazilian striker Vitor Roque making his debut. The 18-year-old signing from Athletico Paranaense will play his first ever game of European football.
This will be Barcelona’s first visit to Las Palmas since March 2018. A superb free kick from Leo Messi meant that the Catalans led 1-0 at the break, but his fellow Argentinian Jonathan Calleri levelled up from the spot and it ended 1-1.
