The European Super League got a major boost on Thursday as the European Union Court of Justice confirmed that UEFA cannot stop any club from joining the competition as it would be contrary to EU Law.

A new format of the league has also been released where teams as many as 64 teams will take part in the competition which will be divided into three divisions — Star, Gold, and Blue — with a promotion and relegation system.

Each team will play 14 matches in the league throughout the year, seven home and seven away, and the income of all those matches will go directly to the clubs.

It has also been revealed that the matches will be televised free of cost as the purpose of the league is not just to protect the players from excessive amounts of matches, but also to renew fans’ interest in the game.

It will also be an open competition with two phases, league and playoffs. All the founding members of the Super League can be relegated and there will be no guaranteed spot for anyone anymore as competition will based completely on Sporting Merit.

It goes all the way back to April 2021 when 12 clubs — Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Spurs, and Liverpool — combined forces to form a new league for the players.

Initially, the league was supposed to play in a close format where 12 top teams would play one another. All the clubs involved faced massive backlash from fans for approving such a format that would not allow small clubs to play such a big competition after which it was confirmed that it would no longer be a close format.

However, with the increasing pressure from UEFA and FIFA, all the clubs except Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Juventus publicly left the project. The Italian club, too, left the project after some time but the two Spanish powerhouses remained till the end and eventually won the case.
