FIFA Disciplinary Committee has confirmed that it is opening disciplinary proceedings against the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubalies.
Rubiales is in hot waters following controversy after the Women’s World Cup final where he kissed Spain’s striker Jennifer Hermoso on the lips.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee informed Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish Football Association, today that it is opening disciplinary proceedings against him based on the events that occurred during the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ on 20 August 2023,” FIFA said in an official statement.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee will only provide further information on these disciplinary proceedings once it has issued a final decision on the matter.
“FIFA reiterates its unwavering commitment to respecting the integrity of all individuals and strongly condemns any behaviour to the contrary.”
Rubiales has already been called out by Spain's sports minister Miquel Iceta, government minister Irene Montero and caretaker Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for his actions.
On the other hand, Hermoso said that "exemplary measures" should be taken against Rubiales.
The Spanish FA have already confirmed that they will hold an Extraordinary General Assembly on Friday (August 25) at their headquarters.
Meanwhile, Spanish football chief Miguel Angel Galan filed a complaint to the Prosecutor's Office in Madrid and the State Attorney General's Office alleging Rubiales' actions constituted sexual assault.
"I would like to file a complaint against Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Soccer Federation, for committing an alleged crime of sexual assault against the Spanish women's soccer team's Jennifer Hermoso," he said.
It must be noted that after the match, Rubiales refused to apologise for his actions and told Spanish broadcaster COPE that it was nothing more than a "kiss between two friends" and anyone who sees it the other way is an "idiot and stupid" but then apologised for his action.
However, Spain's caretaker PM Sanchez said the apology was not enough.
This was not the first time Rubiales did something that was way out of line, he is said to have harassed and humiliated his female colleague in the past.
