English club Chelsea have announced the signing of the French forward Christopher Nkunku from RP Leipzig on Tuesday.
Nkunku, 25, struck a six-year deal with the Blues which will keep him at the club till 2029.
The Frenchman is Chelsea’s second and the manager Mauricio Pochettino’s first signing of the summer since he took charge of the club in May.
"I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea. A big effort was made to bring me to the club. I am very excited for this challenge and will be proud to wear the Chelsea shirt," Nkunku said.
"Having played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, I now want to play in the Premier League, one of the strongest leagues in the world.
"I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and team-mates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch."
The 25-year-old was the Bundesliga’s top-scorer last season having scored 16 goals in 25 matches. He also scored in the German Cup final this month helping his team win the competition for two consecutive years.
Before his stint at the German club, Nkunku played for the French powerhouse Paris Saint Germain (PSG) for four years where he won the Ligue 1 title three and the French Cup two times.
He is also one of the most important players for the French national team but he missed the FIFA World Cup 2022 last year in Qatar as he was injured during training.
Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea's co-sporting directors, said: "Christopher has proved himself one of the standout attacking players in European football over the past two seasons and will add quality, creativity and versatility to our squad."
According to a Spanish source Relevo, Real Madrid were keen to sign the Frenchman to strengthen their attack after the departure of players like Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio and Eden Hazard but they lost the race to Chelsea as the Blues did not waste any time to secure the deal.
Chelsea finished 12th last season the Premier League. They lost more matches (16) than they won (11). They also changed three managers during the season.
