Brentford striker Ivan Toney was banned from football for a period of eight months after breaching the Football Association's (FA) betting rules.

He was also fined 50,000 pounds ($63,000) after admitting to 232 breaches, the governing body said on Wednesday.

“The Brentford FC forward was charged with 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 in total between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232,” the FA said in a statement.

“His sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing. He is permitted to return to training only with his club for the final four months of his suspension starting from 17 September 2023.

“The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and The FA will wait to review them before commenting further.”

As a result, Toney will remain out of action for club or country until January 16, 2024. However, he can take part in training for the final four months of his suspension starting from September 17, 2023.

"Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent regulatory commission. We will review them before considering our next steps," the Premier League club said.

Toney has notched up 20 goals in 33 league games for Brentford this season, which has led his side to ninth place in the Premier League standings.

He won’t be able to feature for his side during Saturday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur and the last game of the season against Manchester City on May 28.
