Cricket South Africa (CSA) has gone for a new approach by appointing separate coaches for red and white ball formats.

On Monday, CSA announced that they have hired Shukri Conrad as their new Test coach while Rob Walter as coach for the limited-overs format.

Following the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, Mark Boucher, who had been in control of all formats, announced his resignation and accepted a position with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Both coaches will take charge on February 1.

Conrad, a veteran head coach in domestic cricket in South Africa, most recently oversaw the national Under-19 squad.

Early in his term, he will have a low workload because South Africa is only slated to play three more Test matches in 2023, beginning with a two-match series against West Indies at home that begins on February 28.

Australia defeated the Proteas 2-0 in their Test series earlier in January.

Meanwhile, Walter will have a lot more on his plate and need to get things going quickly as the ODI World Cup 2023 is scheduled to take place in October-November in India.

Walter has spent the last seven years coaching in New Zealand domestic cricket.  He has previously served as a strength and fitness specialist with the national squad.

Enoch Nkwe, the director of cricket for South Africa, announced that temporary coaching will be used for the team's three-match home one-day international series against England, which gets underway on January 27.

The Proteas are the most recent country to split their coaching roles, following England's decision to replace Chris Silverwood with Brendon McCullum and Matthew Mott. In order to control Andy Flower's workload, England had previously hired Ashley Giles as their white-ball coach in 2012.

With a divided structure, South Africa has also experimented in the past. Russell Domingo initially served as the Proteas' T20 specialist coach before taking over for Gary Kirsten in all forms.
