Cristiano Ronaldo netted a goal in extra time but that was not enough to keep Al-Nassr from being dumped out of the Asian Champions League quarter-finals on penalties by Al-Ain on Monday.

Al-Nassr lost 3-1 on penalties after the tie had ended 4-4 on aggregate. Ronaldo was the only Al-Nassr player to score in the shootout.

The former Real Madrid forward, who fluffed a sitter from three yards in normal time, had a frustrating night in Riyadh.

After losing 1-0 in the first leg in the United Arab Emirates, Ronaldo was instrumental in taking the quarter-final to penalties when he converted from the spot in the 118th minute. His penalty made it 4-3 the hosts, who had Ayman Yahya sent off in the 98th minute, in the second leg.

But three out of four misses in the shootout by Al-Nassr helped Al-Ain move into the last four of Asia's top club competition.

The Brazilian international defender Alex Telles, who has also played for Manchester United in the past, was among the Al-Nassr players to miss during the shootout.

In Tuesday's quarter-finals, Ulsan will lock horns with Jeonbuk in an all-Korean tie locked at 1-1.

The Saudi sides Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal will also step out on the field, with Al Hilal having a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.

Harry Kewell's Yokohama F-Marinos host Chinese side Shandong Taishan on Wednesday with a 2-1 lead from the first leg.
