Jesse Lingard might receive a short-term contract offer from Everton, as the former Manchester United winger continues his search for a new club.
Since departing Nottingham Forest as a free agent last summer, the 31-year-old has remained without a club despite various links to the Premier League, Major League Soccer, and Middle Eastern clubs.
Talksport reported that Sean Dyche’s team, operating on a limited transfer budget, may consider extending a contract to Lingard for the remainder of the season. This move aims to aid their efforts in avoiding relegation, especially after a 10-point deduction due to financial sustainability rule breaches.
Lingard has been training independently in recent months and will likely need a period of conditioning before being match-ready.
Earlier in the season, he trained with West Ham United for a month before pursuing another opportunity, which didn't materialize. This occurred while the Europa Conference League victors were contemplating a short-term contract offer.
Hammers boss David Moyes said at the time that he was “not at all disappointed” that Lingard left to pursue a potential opportunity in Saudi Arabia. “I’m quite comfortable and more than relaxed with it.
“I think I’ve been indicating to you boys [the media] that we’re having to see what he’s going to do and how’s he going to be. We like Jesse a lot but I just don’t know if we need another player in the position he would probably play for us.”
Lingard had previously stated his search for a "project" aligning with his plans. However, the ex-Manchester United and England player has now gone nearly eight months without competitive play.
Reports from France suggest that Lille in Ligue 1 have expressed interest, while Lingard might have new prospects in MLS as their season recommences next month.
Previously associated with DC United, the club Wayne Rooney departed before an unsuccessful stint at Birmingham City, Lingard's options seem to be expanding. Rooney's tenure ended today with his dismissal from the club.
