South Africa defeated Afghanistan by five wickets in the 42nd match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, India, on Friday and ended their group-stage campaign on a high side.
This was the Proteas' seventh win in the tournament which helped them finish second in the World Cup points table with 14 points.
ICC World Cup 2023 points table:
India, South Africa and Australia have already booked their place in the mega event's semi-final and as of now, two teams — New Zealand and Pakistan — are fighting for the one vacant position.
As things stand, the Black Caps seem to be in a dominating position to qualify courtesy of their astonishing net run rate (NRR).
Pakistan's chances of qualifying for the World Cup semi-final are not mathematically over as they can still do it but it, by all means, has become nearly impossible.
Here is how Pakistan can qualify for the World Cup semi-final:
If Pakistan bat first against England, they would have to beat them by 287 runs.
If Pakistan bowl first, they need to dismiss England for 50 runs and chase the target in two overs or 100 runs in three overs.
The Green Shirts play England next at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 11 and Jos Buttler's men need a win there to ensure their qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy. By all means, one of two sides would lose one thing on Saturday.
