Day three of the fifth Ashes Test concluded with England at 389-9 in 80 overs in their second innings.

The hosts have a staggering 377-run lead as they look to level the series.

Stuart Broad (2) and James Anderson (8) will resume batting for the home side on day four.

England started their final inning with a 12-run deficit.

The hosts had a wonderful start without losing a wicket in the first 15 overs. Openers Zack Crawley and Ben Duckett had a 79-run stand before the latter was removed by Mitchell Starc for 42 runs.

After Duckett’s removal, Ben Stokes came to bat which was very unusual for everyone as the English skipper normally bats at number six.

Crawley completed his well-deserved fifty after a wonderful start then he fell prey to Pat Cummins after scoring 73 off 76, following BazBall, with nine boundaries.

Joe Root and Stokes formed a 73-run partnership but the latter was then removed by Todd Murphy before he could complete his half-century as he was just eight runs away.

After Harry Brook, who top-scored with 85 runs in England’s first innings, was dismissed, Jonny Bairstow and Root formed a much-needed 110-run stand exactly at the point where England needed a big partnership.

The middle-order batter hit Mitchell Marsh for a ramp shot which went for a six.

Root missed out on his well-deserved century by just eight runs after losing his wicket to Murphy.

Moeen Ali came after Root’s dismissal, after scoring some quick runs he too went back to the pavilion.

Starc and Murphy starred for Australia by taking four and three wickets respectively.

Earlier on day two which was full of events, Marnus Labuschagne played an interesting knock, scoring just nine off 82 balls but he was stunned by Joe Root’s one-handed stunning catch from the first slip on Mark Wood’s pacey and bouncy ball.

However, just before Labuschagne’s wicket, Broad played mind games with the Australian. First by swapping the bails on the wicket, then he high-fived Khawaja on the non-striker’s end and then hugged his teammates, creating a strange atmosphere for the batter.

Broad also became the third-highest wicket-taker in the Ashes with his 150th Test wicket against Australia after he removed Travis Head for just four runs.

The Aussies lead the series 2-1 and have already successfully retained the Ashes.
