The upcoming Women's World Cup will be the "best one yet", according to the United States striker Alex Morgan.

Morgan believes that the increase in the number of teams to 32 from 24 will have a positive impact on competitiveness and viewing figures.

The ninth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will include 64 matches with the first match and opening ceremony set to take place on July 20 at New Zealand’s Eden Park in Auckland.

This will be the first FIFA Women's football World Cup to have two host nations, Australia and New Zealand.

The United States are looking to win third straight title, and fifth overall, and will start their campaign against Vietnam at Eden Park on July 22 before locking horns with Netherlands and Portugal.

Morgan also stated that touching down in the host country for the World Cup led to a mixture of "nerves, anticipation and excitement" and that while there are many similarities with the past editions this one is "going to be the best one yet."

"We have 32 teams in the World Cup like never before, so it's just going to be very competitive; it's going to be the most watched World Cup," she added at their first training session in Auckland.

The United States took part in a training camp in New Zealand in January, defeating the co-hosts in two matches in Wellington and Auckland, and Morgan hopes home fans will support her side as their second-favourite team behind the 'Football Ferns'.

This will be the fourth World Cup appearance for the 34-year-old.

Forward Megan Rapinoe, who clinched the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards in 2019, will also be playing at her fourth World Cup but said the tournament still gives her butterflies.

"There's nothing quite like that and only comes every four years so it's a nice little treat every time," she added.
