FC Barcelona are close to completing the signing of the German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on Wednesday.
According to a journalist close to the club, Roger Torello, the Spanish club is optimistic that the deal could be completed today and there will be no complications in registering the Manchester City star.
Gundogan, 32, has been on top of the wishlist for the Catalan club as head coach Xavi Hernandez is a big admirer of the midfielder and is confident that signing him would add more quality to the squad.
Gundogan’s experience, versatility and most importantly a free transfer are some of the reasons why Barca are pushing for a move so hard.
Earlier while talking to a press, City’s head coach Pep Guardiola made it clear that his and the club’s priority is to keep their captain despite strong interest from the Spanish Club.
"We are interested in renewing his contract and [Barcelona] are also interested," Guardiola said at the Puma Legends golf tournament.
"I hope he stays with us. We are still fighting for him to stay with us. He is a player we want to stay, and we will do all we can, but we know Barca want him.
"If Barça sign him, they will have a spectacular footballer on their hands. I am aware Xavi has called him a lot. If, in the end, he picks Barca, I will tell him he will enjoy himself."
However, it seems like the German is off to Barcelona as he is looking for a new challenge in the later part of his career.
The 32-year-old led Manchester City to a historic treble last season where they also won their first-ever UEFA Champions League (UCL) title in the club’s history. He also scored a brace in FA Cup final against Manchester United to help his team seal the trophy.
Earlier, Xavi confirmed that his priority is to sign at least two midfielders to cover up for the departure of Sergio Busquets, who left the club after 14 years.
“I need two signings in midfield. I lack an interior and with Busquets' departure, we also need a pivot,” Xavi said. “This has to be the priority.”
