Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios’ participation in the upcoming Wimbledon has become a subject of concern following his withdrawal from the ATP 500 event in Halle.
The 28-year-old, who was sidelined for the better part of 2023 due to knee surgery, marked his return at the Boss Open in Stuttgart last week.
The Australian only managed to play one match in which he suffered a straight-sets loss to China’s Yibing Wu in the first round. The player could not perform to the highest level due to his limited movement.
However, The Aussie has quoted his resurfaced knee injury as the reason behind his withdrawal from the tournament, the tournament he was the semi-finalist in last year.
Kyrgios’ no-show at the ATP 500 event has raised concerns over his Wimbledon 2023 participation. While the Aussie has no points to defend at Wimbledon due to the tournament’s ranking points fiasco from last year, the 28-year-old is the defending runner-up nonetheless.
The 28-year-old has also been hailed as the favourite at the upcoming grasscourt Slam. The Australian along with the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz are said to be Novak Djokovic’s biggest threat in Wimbledon.
A few days back, Kyrgios took to his Twitter to ask everyone to give him some time as he had just undergone knee surgery.
“Be patient with me my fans please…. It’s a process to get back to where I was. I know it’s hard for you to see me perform like today, but I need more time and hopefully can get back to where I was,” Kyrgios tweeted.
It must be noted that Kyrgios, whose original plan was to make a comeback in Indian Wells in March, also skipped the Roland Garros because he did not want to rush his return to the field.
