KARACHI: The 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup has had many surprises, so far, and one of the biggest shockers of this World Cup has been the downfall of the defending champions England.
England has played five games in this year’s World Cup and has only been able to win one of them, against Bangladesh. These five matches also include their shocking defeat to Afghanistan by 137 runs.
A similar disastrous World Cup campaign was seen by England fans in the 2015 World Cup which was played in Australia.
In this article, we try to dig deep into England’s performances in World Cup matches at home and away.
Overall, England has played 88 games till date in World Cup history. They have won 49 and suffered defeats in 36 games. They are the current champions of ODI cricket and apart from 2019, they have also featured in the final of 1979, 1987, and 1992 editions of the Cricket World Cup.
If we talk about England’s performance in World Cup matches outside England, they have played 56 games and have lost nearly half of them (27). It is pertinent to mention here that their overall World Cup defeats of England in World Cup are 36 in number, and out of these 36, 27 came in away conditions. This highlights how much England has struggled outside of home in World Cup matches.
At home, their run is rather dominant in World Cup matches. They have played 32 games at home in World Cup history. They have won 23 out of these (including the super-over win in 2019) and have lost only nine.
The first three editions of the Cricket World Cup were played in England. England played in the semi-finals in 1975 and 1983, while they were the runners-up in 1979. Then in 1987 and 1992, they also finished as runners-up, but these two World Cup editions were not staged in England.
From 1996 to 2015, England never made it to the semi-finals of the World Cup and in this duration, only once the World Cup was played in England. During the rest of the World Cup editions, England struggled big time playing in away conditions. Then in 2019, they emerged as Champions, and in 2023, they have started off in the worst possible way and their journey looks “almost over”.
